"Bright skies will soon be o'er me, where darkest clouds have been." - Hymn #148, Christian Science Hymnal |
"The natural fruits of Christian Science Mind-healing are harmony,
brotherly love, spiritual growth and activity."
- The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany, by Mary Baker Eddy (213:1-3)
On page 587 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, Mrs. Eddy gives this simple, beautiful, definition of God:
587:5
God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.
Throughout the scriptures these terms are used to describe God, and as synonyms for God. In Christian Science, we learn that these attributes, these aspects, of God are not only keys to understanding God, but they are present, and represented, in each of us, and result in all types of healing. From the physical to the financial, from personal relationships to governments, the application of divine laws results in healing.
In my own experience, through the application of the understanding of God as these attributes, I've experienced healing of injuries from accidents, a cyst of over 20 years, addiction, employment, and a list that could go on for days. But, what is most special to me is that through this understanding I've been able to help others with as varied a list. I've even been able to help our dogs (5 adorable Pugs: Monster, Phoebe, Piper, Paige, and Leo) with problems they seem to have had. I'll talk more about them in a page specifically for pets, and probably elsewhere, too! But, helping others to see that God is always, immediately at hand, no matter the circumstance or evidence, is a phenomenal thing, and it is what our teacher, Christ Jesus, has given us the call to do. As Christian Scientists, or for anyone who is working out their way through the human experience, learning that it's not about fixing out material circumstance, but identifying that God's perfection is present, here and now, because it is all that exists, is the key to healing.
